Rate limits

WhatsApp API rate limits: messages per second, the daily messaging limit for new customers, per-customer limits and how to handle error 130429.

WhatsApp limits how fast and how widely you can message:

  • Throughput. Each number can send about 80 messages per second. Above that, requests fail with 130429. Slow down and retry with backoff.
  • Messaging limit. This is the number of different customers you can start conversations with, using templates, in a rolling 24 hours. New numbers start at 250. WhatsApp raises the limit (1,000, 10,000, 100,000, then unlimited) as you send more messages that customers don't block or report. Replies inside the 24-hour window don't count. Changes arrive as phone_number_quality_update events.
  • Per customer. Sending many messages to the same customer in a short time fails with 131056. Wait before messaging them again.
  • Per API key. HostMentor accepts up to 1,000 requests in 10 seconds with one key, well above WhatsApp's own limit. Above that, requests fail with HTTP 429 and rate_limited.
